Terriers Remain Undefeated in America East
Women’s b-ball beats rival Hartford, 76-65
The women’s basketball Terriers are now the only team undefeated in America East play after last night’s matchup at Case Gym, where BU defeated defending conference champion Hartford, 76-65. Amarachi Umez-Eronini (CAS’09) led the Terriers with 19 points; Jesyka Burks-Wiley (CAS’09), who passed the 1,000-point mark January 17, followed with 18.
The Terriers, now 11-6 on the season and 5-0 in conference play, are on a six-game winning streak.
Burks-Wiley, who grabbed five rebounds last night, is just one rebound away from joining an exclusive club of Terrier ballplayers who have both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds over their college career.
Boston University leads the America East in three categories — field goal percentage (.416), free-throw percentage (.727), and turnover margin (+2.75). The Terriers’ offense has been on a tear lately, posting 74.4 points per game and outscoring its opponents by an average of 9.2 points per game during its five-game winning stretch. In the last four contests, BU has won by at least 11 points, and the team has posted 80 plus points in five games this season.
Leading the way in the frontcourt is Burks-Wiley, who is in the midst of the best offensive season of her collegiate career. She is averaging 17.7 points per game, making her second in the conference, and 7.1 rebounds per game, for a ranking of fifth. She has posted at least 20 points on eight occasions and on January 17 matched a career-high 24 points against New Hampshire. Joining Burks-Wiley in double-figure scoring are Christine Kinneary (CAS’09) (12.1 ppg) and Kristi Dini (SAR’09) (11.9 ppg).
The Terriers’ senior class of Burks-Wiley, Dini, Kinneary, and Umez-Eronini needs nine more wins this season to become the all-time winningest class in program history. They currently own a .583 winning percentage over four seasons — the best in 19 years — with a 63-45 record.
The class of 1990 was 71-42 (.628), recording the most wins over a four-year period at BU. Lynn Bay, Renee Doctor, Marjorie Haney, Lynne Ranando, and Tia Theriault were members of that class.
BU will hit the road for the first time in more than two weeks when it travels to Orono for a 7 p.m. tip-off with Maine on Saturday, January 24.
