Eye care becomes part of employee health benefits

The days of shelling out upwards of $200 a year for new glasses are over for BU employees.
Boston University’s Human Resources has announced a new eye-care benefit for employees and their families through the New England Eye Institute (NEEI).
The partnership means that BU employees and their families who participate in any BU health insurance plan will have office copayments for their eye examinations waived at select NEEI clinics. Employees just need to present a health plan ID card.
There will be no additional health-care insurance cost for the added benefit.
“This is something employees can take advantage of that provides them with savings,” says Nimet Gundogan, Human Resources executive director of employee benefits.
This new benefit also means that employees receive a discount of up to 40 percent for eyewear and competitive pricing for contact lenses — a discount available to all employees and their family members, not just participants in the BU health-care program.
NEEI offers a full range of eye-care services, including full eye-care exams, pediatric and vision therapy services, optical services, contact lens and cornea services, low vision and rehabilitative services, consultative ophthalmology, and laser vision correction evaluations.
Periodic eye exams are a necessary part of preventive health care. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems helps maintain good vision and prevent vision loss. The American Optometric Association recommends that adults have an eye exam at least every two years. Contact lens wearers, as well as those with diabetes, a family history of eye problems, or other health problems should see an eye doctor more often.
The two clinics employees and their families can visit are at 930 Commonwealth Ave. and in Roslindale Square at 4199 Washington St.
