There are 4 comments on Brian Durocher, Hockey Mentor

  1. Coach Durocher is an outstanding coach and person. I meet him once, and was immediately impressed with him. Mr. Durocher quiet demeanor and down to earth personally makes me believe that the BU Women’s Hockey program is not only in great hands, but could contend very soon for a NCAA National Championship. To compete against the other established women’s programs in the New England area: Harvard, Northeastern, and UNH, I believe BU is already is in elite company. I am glad Hockey East established a women’s conference and looking forward to seeing BU in a HE Tourney Final and the NCAA’s.

  2. The steady progress in wins and playoff appearances only begin to tell the story of the success of this team. The BU Community can be justifiably proud of the way the BU Women conduct themselves on an off the ice. They have created a classy addition not only to the athletic program, but the University. In that, the BU Women’s Hockey Program is nothing less than a reflection of the quality and character of its coach. Although he would be the first to deny it, BU is lucky indeed to have Brian Durocher.

  3. As a player for the BU women’s club team in the late 70s, early 80s, I am thrilled to pieces for the success of the current team. Wish I were in the area to be at all the games!!

That said, I think it’s worth giving credit to the programs that came before the team’s “only five years in existence.” In 1976, I was a BU freshman who had been enthralled by Dorothy Hamill’s win in the Olympics … only to briefly try figure skating as a high school senior who wound up envying the hockey players at the rink.

So when I found out about BU’s women’s club team that fall, I eagerly signed up. Didn’t know how to skate? No problem. They taught me. Not sure how I wound up in goal, but I was (fortunately) the first string goalie only one year (my sophomore year). Still remember getting creamed by UNH 13-0 (as I recall, there were 78 shots on net in that game).

But even in those golden oldie days, we had some great teams, including the 1981 squad that has won BU’s only women’s Beanpot trophy: http://www.beanpothockey.com/women/

It’s terrific that Brian Durocher is leading up such a good squad. Props to him and the team. But I think it’s also worth giving props to the early squads who represented the school back when the only team the university cared much about was Jack Parker’s.

We weren’t nationally ranked, we didn’t have scholarships or perks (our locker room back then was one of the ladies rest rooms at Walter Brown), but we loved the game and playing for BU.

I can’t speak for them all, but I for one am damn proud to be part of the history!
