Top Terrier Moments: Number 1 — Field Hockey Upsets Iowa in Double Overtime at NCAAs

The Terrier Twelve — a countdown of the top moments for BostonUniversity athletics during the 2007–2008 season — ends with the fieldhockey team’s 1-0 double-overtime victory over two-time defending BigTen champion Iowa in the first round of the NCAA tournament on November 11.The win advanced the Terriers to the NCAA quarterfinals for thefirst time since 1991.
On a penalty corner in the 88th minute, Suus Dekker(CGS’08) sent home a rebound off her own shot to break a scoreless tie and pushthe Terriers past the Hawkeyes, who were ranked fifth in the finalNFHCA national poll of the season.
BU outshot Iowa, 15-6 — 7-0 in overtime — and earned five penalty corners, allowing just one.
The Terriers eventually dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to number-four UConn in the quarterfinals, but it was without question a banneryear for field hockey.
With the victory over Iowa, the Terriers set a new programrecord for wins in a season, at 18. And their 61 victories overfour seasons made the eight seniors on the team the winningest class in school history.
Pam Spuehler(CAS’08) went on to be named one of four finalists for the Honda Award, the national player of theyear, in addition to earning first-team All-Americahonors, becoming BU’s first three-time All-American in the process.Sarah Hudak (SAR’08) was a third-team All-American, and Dekker earned second-team honors. In addition to the All-America trio, Sarah Shute (SHA’08) and Laura Dean(ENG’08) were all-region honorees. Hudak was tabbed America East DefensivePlayer of the Year and was the sport’s scholar-athlete of the year.
Spuehler received the Mildred Barnes Award, given annually to BU’s topfemale athlete, and Hudak — after copping BU’s Woman of the Year honor — went on to be named the America East Woman of the Year, one of theleague’s top honors. Hadley Adams (CFA’08) had the highest GPA of any female student-athlete at BU.
