Introducing a Bigger, Better BU Today
New design offers more stories, more interaction
To our readers:
When BU Today launched in 2005, replacing the weekly newspaper, the BU Bridge, nobody really understood how many stories the Boston University community had to tell and how many ways there were to tell them. We began, simply, as an online newspaper, writing articles about University news and events and putting them on the Web for wider distribution.
But students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni spoke up. They told us about professors making new discoveries about the ancient Maya, about students finding a powerful sense of purpose through prayer, and about Dining Services workers who create culinary masterpieces and become campus legends. They asked us to tell them about major campus initiatives, such as the Strategic Plan, and to post immediate reports when tragedy strikes our community.
Two years after our launch, BU Today is doing all that. Now it’s time for our look to catch up with our content.
Today’s edition marks the debut of BU Today, version 2.0, imagined and designed by the Office of New Media and the editorial staff at BU Today. We’ve added more room for photographs and videos, made archived stories easier to find, and put information about campus events where it belongs — front and center.
Other changes include:
Topic Pages: Stories are now organized by category, making it easier for readers to navigate to the pages that interest them. An article on the latest performance at the College of Fine Arts, for example, will appear on the main BU Today page and in Arts & Entertainment, while a story about a men’s ice hockey game will be in Sports.
Commenting: If you have something to say about a story on BU Today, you can now post your comments directly onto the page. You can still e-mail the writers or editors individually as well.
Editor’s Picks: You won’t have to search for the stories that readers keep coming back to — the Editor’s Picks section, in the center of the homepage, makes popular pieces easy to find.
We think you’ll find the new BU Today easier to navigate, more interactive, and yes, prettier than last year’s model. Please let us know what you think at today@bu.edu.
Thank you for helping make BU Today part of life at Boston University.
