Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra Tunes Up for Mozart
BYSO, CFA alums to stage Cosi fan tutte on Sunday
The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, which has been in residence at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts since 1958, will perform a semistaged version of Mozart’s beloved comic opera Cosi fan tutte on Sunday, January 20, at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre.
Cosi fan tutte, a mischievous tale of love and fidelity, was first performed in Vienna in 1790. The opera was the last of three collaborations between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro were the other two). The libretto is sometimes criticized for being too dark and ambiguous, and the musical style for inconsistency. Others, however, argue the feeling is appropriate to the subject matter.
The performance will feature Jim Petosa, a professor and the director of CFA’s school of theatre, as stage director. BYSO music director Federico Cortez will conduct. Five recent alumni of CFA’s Opera Institute will also perform.
The BYSO performance of Cosi fan tutte starts at 3 p.m. at Sanders Theatre, 45 Quincy St., Cambridge. Tickets are $25 and $30. Groups, students, and senior citizens receive a $5 discount per ticket. Click here for more information.
