The paint was still wet on a few of Adrienne Ginter’s canvases as she hung them in the 808 Gallery — the result of a final push to finish before tonight’s opening of the College of Fine Arts MFA Student Exhibitions 2008.
“Each one took a month and a half to finish, working 12 hours a day,” says Ginter (CFA’08), whose large paintings are inspired by literature and pop culture. Karima Klasen (CFA’08) also put in long hours, working through the night to complete the final arrangement of more than 1,000 tiny paintings on her section of wall. “This work has been a big step in my life,” she says, “and the display of it is just one part of the excitement.”
The works in the MFA Painting and Sculpture Exhibition reveal a range of styles and influences that the artists developed over the course of their work at CFA’s school of visual arts: Ginter’s paintings are detailed down to the tiniest leaf, while Julia Fernandez-Pol (CFA’08) uses a more abstract approach to her oil paintings, studying what she describes as “organic, aqueous, plantlike structures.” And Lizzy Martinez (CFA’08) took an extra step in learning about the human form for her paintings, visiting Boston Medical Center to watch medical students at work.
“This has been part of a two-year journey,” Fernandez-Pol says, “and I hope it’s not the beginning of an abrupt stop to my work. I want to keep going, keep growing.”
The MFA Student Exhibitions 2008 begin tonight at three locations, each with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. that is free and open to the public. The MFA Graphic Design Exhibition is at the BU Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery, 855 Commonwealth Ave. The MFA Painting and Sculpture Exhibition is at the 808 Gallery, 808 Commonwealth Ave. The MFA/BFA Art Education and Studio Teaching Exhibition is at the Commonwealth Gallery, 855 Commonwealth Ave. The exhibitions run through May 4, 2008.
