Keep your skin safe from the sun this summer
Tip: Apply at least a palm full of SPF 15 or 30 on all exposed skin 20 minutes prior to going in the sun.

Alan Geller, a School of Medicine research associate professor of dermatology, stresses skin protection to avoid nasty sunburns this summer. He says that skin cancer can be prevented if the proper sun protection is used.
Geller recommends applying at least a palm full of SPF 15 or 30 on all exposed skin surfaces. Sunblock, he says, should be applied 20 minutes before going outside and reapplied every few hours.
“The important thing isn’t really the number of the SPF, but the vigilance of making sure that the skin is fully covered with sunblock,” Geller says. “Go out, be out in the sun, exercise, play sports, and swim, but do it wisely and with as much protection from the sun as possible.”
