Apart from research, the Andersson Lab engages in various outreach programs involving students from middle school and high school. As an effort to educate pre-university students about some of the research that occurs in the Andersson Lab, a LEGO model of the atomic force microscope (AFM) has been designed. This model simulates the actual AFM and demonstrates the various mechanisms through which the AFM operates. The model has been constructed primarily using the LEGO Mindstorms set. It has also been programmed using the NXT Programming Software and MATLAB in order to perform the imaging functionality of the actual AFM.
