Sports Communication

COM CM 350

This course introduces students to the key concepts and practices of Sports Public Relations. Topics include the role of PR in sports, media relations, collaboration with journalists, and the strategic use of writing and storytelling to plan and execute sports-related PR campaigns across a variety of multimedia platforms. Students will learn how to navigate ethical and crisis communication challenges involving athletes, teams, leagues, and all realms of the sports landscape. The course also explores the growing impact of AI in sports PR and its role in media monitoring, content creation, and fan engagement. Additional focus is given to community relations, sponsorship, marketing, and the business of sports media, highlighting how PR supports brand building and shapes public perception. This class will be a mix of lectures, real-world scenarios, case studies, guest speakers, experiential projects, and more.
