Visual Arts: Painting 1
CFA AR 295
An introductory to intermediate studio painting course for non-major students, emphasizing direct painting techniques in oil. Through exercises in still life, landscape, portrait, and figure painting, students develop foundational skills in drawing, composition, color, and technique while exploring both perceptual and conceptual approaches to representational painting. Guided by references to art historical models, the course examines the painter’s language and modes of expression, including color, material, illusion, and the organization of form and space. Studio practice is complemented by lectures and discussions that foster critical understanding of painting processes and visual interpretation.
