    Pre-practicum experience that engages students in observing and assisting in middle and/or high school classrooms. 2cr. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in the following BU Hub area: Teamwork/Collaboration.

  • SED CT 510: Cultural Identity and Global Education
    Examine various ways in which global education has been conceptualized and implemented throughout the world. Produce educational media with young members of a cultural community in the Boston area. 2cr, either sem.
  • SED CT 520: Leading Future Educators I
    Preparation and reflection for teachers who are leading education classes in their high schools. Open only to sponsors of Education Rising chapters
  • SED CT 522: Character and Ethics Education
    Examines philosophical ideas at the core of virtue ethics, as well as historic efforts to introduce values, ethics, and character into curriculum. Explores the moral socialization, various versions of moral education, controversies in the field, and the current challenges. Development and presentation of instructional materials for elementary, middle, and secondary classrooms. 4cr, 1st sem.
  • SED CT 524: Institute on Values in Physical Education and Sport
    Addresses central issues in sport and physical education today. Character growth and sportsmanship are examined from the perspective of demands for excellence. Values and excellence are analyzed in relation to students of widely varied talents. Core assumptions and experience in pedagogical situations are given practical resolution. 4cr, 2nd sem.
  • SED CT 526: Family & Community Engagement for Teachers
    Explores the ways that schools can work closely with families, communities, and community agencies to increase connections and mutual assistance. Consistent with DESE regulations, this course emphasizes collaborative relationships with families and with community partners such as youth- serving organizations, health and safety agencies, and other groups and businesses. 4cr.

  • SED CT 528: Curriculum Development in Intercultural Education
    Examines theoretical and practical aspects in the development of intercultural curriculum materials. Analysis of approaches to intercultural and multicultural education through the history of American schools and in other educational systems around the world. 4 cr.
  • SED CT 534: A Practical Approach to Classroom Management
    Designed to support middle and secondary teachers in developing a practical, effective and low-stress approach to classroom management. The course focuses on a classroom management system with four components: classroom structure, limit-setting, responsibility training and back-up systems. Participants will develop effective classroom management practices, break current "high cost" and ineffective strategies, and establish a proactive, positive classroom setting that maximizes time on learning and minimizes classroom disruptions. 2 cr.
  • SED CT 538: Curriculum Development in Intercultural Education
    Examines theoretical and practical aspects in the development of intercultural curriculum materials. Analysis of approaches to intercultural and multicultural education through the history of American schools and in other educational systems around the world. 4cr.
  • SED CT 541: Practical Ethics for Teachers and Administrators
    Preparation for teachers and administrators to deal throughtfully with the many ethical challenges they will face in their classrooms, schools, and in relations with the teaching profession. Through case studies, a review of legal material, consideration of foundational ethical theory, and in-class situtation modeling, the course will consider such matters as teachers' and students' rights, character educaion, curriculum design, school choice, and parental responsibilities.
  • SED CT 550: Teacher Leadership in Curriculum and Instruction
    Increases capacity of experienced teachers to provide innovative and effective assistance for other teachers. Focus: understanding and accepting teacher leadership, designing and implementing long-term professional development, and improvements in school culture. Primary for teachers in overseas programs.
  • SED CT 556: Classroom Assessment
    Emphasizes principles and procedures of assessment that are of primary importance to educational practitioners. Includes diagnostic tests, construction of classroom tests, observation techniques, and performance measures; norm- and criterion-referenced assessment; uses of standardized tests, current issues and controversies. 4cr.

    Development of teaching skills and classroom strategies common to a variety of teaching matters. Includes instructional planning, integrating subject matter with learner's age level and educational environment. Analysis of best practices across all academic areas, learning theories, evaluation, and specific teaching techniques. 4 cr.
  • SED CT 582: Ethical Leadership: Character, Civility and Community
    Offered with the Ethical Leadership MOOC, this course provides theoretical and practical approaches from Professor Fluker's method of educating leaders as ethical pioneers in their organization. Completion of Blackboard discussions and assignments are required for BU degree and non-degree seeking students. 4cr.

  • SED CT 625: Inclusion of Students with Disabilities in Laboratory Science
    This course explores the pedagogical, scientific, and legal bases for including students with disabilities in science laboratory experiences. Emphasis will be on the collaboration strategies for special and science educators in inclusive settings through cross-training experiences, including practical implementation. 4cr, Summer Term.
