Departments/Divisions Section Guidelines
The Department* section contains two levels:
- Department landing page (i.e., hyperlinked list of departments)
- Individual department pages
Department Landing Page
- Bulleted list of departments in alphabetical order, each linking to its second-level page.
Example
(first entry hyperlinked as an example)
- Anthropology
- Archaeology
- History of Art & Architecture
A good example of a department landing page is in the College of Communication bulletin.
Individual Department Page
Individual Department pages have three components:
Think: Brief. Academics-only. Bird’s-eye view. Remember, the Bulletin is a place for academic information; provide links to Creative Services for information contained elsewhere (e.g., on your school’s website).Department Overview

Do NOT Include
High-level Department overview—break up with bullets and subheads as necessary—may include some or all of the elements below:
Lengthy text that attempts to cover history, selling points and details of the Department
Overall focus/mission/objectives
Detailed list of degrees offered (these belong in Programs)
Range of degrees and programs: High-level look at range of degrees offered in this department (BA, BS, MA, etc.) and a note about the Program(s) that the Department houses
General attractions of Boston or BU as a place to study or live (these belong on your school website)
Research foci
Information available on your own school/college website (e.g. “Why study at…?”)
Facilities/special research equipment
List of programs (these belong in Programs section)
General note about faculty (e.g., size, general joint appointments, etc.)
List of faculty (these belong in the Faculty section) or long or detailed administration lists (these belong on your school website)
General note on special opportunities (study abroad, internships, and so on)
Policy information (this belongs in the Policy section)
Organizations/associations/affiliations
Requirements (these belong in the Program section)
Administration/Contact Sidebar
Core curriculum (this belongs in the Program section)
Application/admissions information (info specific to a particular Program belongs in Program section; general detailed school/college info belongs in Policies)
Grade requirements (info specific to a particular Program belongs in Program section; general detailed info belongs in Policies)
Any other details that belong or already exist in other bulletin sections or on your school’s website
Administration and Contact Sidebar
For departments, this list may include department chairs and associate chairs, key faculty, and general contact information for the department as a whole.
