There are 7 comments on Build BU: New Leaders Look to Raise Student Government Profile

  1. I really don’t want any of the things they’re pushing for. Why should we get a new MLK monument? Nobody is doubting he was a great person, but how is this helping my education.

Free textbooks? C’mon, you know nothing is free. All you’re doing is moving the cost into tuition.

Gender-neutral housing and bathrooms are unnecessary and expensive, unless your plan is to just slap a new sign on an existing bathroom. Why isn’t it enough to just let people use whichever they feel comfortable woth? Why must every student help pay so that a tiny minority can have their own special place to piss?

Grade deflation isn’t a problem. Study harder.

Only one I like is opening Mugar for finals, but overwhelmingly this seems like a stupid and expensive platform that will do nothing but raise tuition.

I wish people would remember that things aren’t free. Other’s have to pay for the stupid meaningless crap they want to do.

    1. Agreed. I don’t see any suggestions of how the new government might work with the Boston University administration to find mutually sought-for goals, or strategies to develop sources for financing changes in, for example, the hours Mugar ia open before finals.

The voter turn-out is so low that one priority of current and prospective student leaders might be to tackle issues that affect all undergraduate students.

    2. “Gender-neutral housing and bathrooms are unnecessary and expensive, unless your plan is to just slap a new sign on an existing bathroom. Why isn’t it enough to just let people use whichever they feel comfortable woth (sic)? Why must every student help pay so that a tiny minority can have their own special place to piss?”

You’re outstandingly detached from this issue, and I can’t tell if you’re being diminutive, degrading, or both. BuildBU adopted this initiative after having looked at the Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Activism’s proposal “Gender Inclusive BU: A Proposal To Improve Conditions For The LGBTQIA+ Community At Boston University.” The proposal is comprehensive and can be found at bit.ly/lgbtqbu. The document can inform a lot of your opinions.

    3. CONSTRUCTIVE Criticism is important, but you should think about how you phrase things… I don’t see you running for student office. If you have issues with their platform you should go to one of their meetings to express your concerns in person as that would probably be the most helpful for them when taking on this job. Obviously, they want to make moves that will help the student body, and their platform was informed off of student opinions. Just because it was not informed off of YOUR opinions does not mean it is “stupid” nor is it “meaningless”. Love students that are involved in their own education, and dissent is important, but do it with some tact.

  2. Excited to see the undergraduates willing to take more control over their experience on campus. Just watching from the law school, even I knew this group was heavily campaigning. Congrats and much luck!

  3. Love this! Glad to have more students of color making their voices heard. Hopefully, the school will back most of these initiatives. Keep up the good work!

  4. Where can we find a list of past student body presidents? We are particularly interested in the mid to late 1960’s. There was one named Julian (can’t remember his last name). Can you help? Thanks in advance.
