  1. Communications is indeed key.

    I think all communications about NEIDL should include the caveat: NEIDL does not now and never will work with airborne diseases.

    Without this guarantee, Boston is a very stupid place to locate NEIDL.
    Yet, in a dozen articles over many years, I have never seen this statement in traditional media (eg Boston.com)

    Scientists have a tendency to assume all criticism from outside their community is non-scientific. Non-scientists have a tendency to assume scientists are wise enough to communicate the most salient facts. These assumptions are often false.

    To help everyone keep a level head, it is important to check in with the science writers and science populists that act as gatekeepers between scientists and the community at large. These people tend to understand the important points of quality discussion.
