LEAP Scholarship Application
Call for Applications
Fall 2011 LEAPscholarship
Deadline: July 15
(From the ASPH Friday Letter)
LEAP Foundation DC will offer its Scholar-in-Residence program for this fall; the program is an opportunity for college students seeking to advance their professional career in education, public health and/or social work while gaining academic credit. The Foundations Scholar will be afforded housing and the opportunity to participate in a 16-week program that fosters the growth and development of residents in the District of Columbia and surrounding communities. The application deadline for the fall program is July 15. Scholars will begin no later than September.
The scholarship experience focuses specifically on strengthening expertise in public health, education and human development. By implementing traditional institutional research methods and applied clinical practice, scholars will acquire the knowledge and leadership expertise on how to carefully examine communities and organizations as a level of intervention for addressing serious health concerns facing individual, communities and the nation.
The resident scholars work closely with LEAP’s President, Dr. Clayton G. Lawrence, and have the opportunity to contribute to the foundation’s main discussions on topics such as childhood obesity prevention, vocational counseling and career development, with emphasis on regional and national health-related issues.
To apply, the following documentation should be sent to the foundation:
- A two-page personal statement of interest. The statement should include the applicant’s background and commitment to public service, as well as an explanation of how the scholarship experience will help the applicant achieve his or her long-term goals.
- A copy of the applicant’s resume.
- A copy of the applicant’s transcript.
- Two letters of recommendation: one from a faculty member, and one from a previous employer who supervised the applicant’s work. If possible, choose someone who can describe a personal contribution to the public sector.
- Official letter from the dean of the university or college, certifying academic credit from experience when applicable.
- A signed release for a credit and criminal background check.
Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected by LEAP Foundation DC’s chairman. Applicants may be evaluated on their academic performance, leadership and initiative in facing and overcoming challenges. Preference will be given to candidates who can earn academic credit as an internship or practical experience for degree completion.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome, in writing, by early August.
