Social Work with Groups

Special Issue on Standards for Social Work Practice with Groups

Co-Editors: Carol S. Cohen, Charles Garvin, Mark J. Macgowan, Barbara Muskat

This special issue will focus on the development and use of standards for social work practice with groups.

The Standards for Social Work Practice with Groups were developed by the Practice Committee of the Board of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups (AASWG), with the First Edition adopted by the AASWG Board in 1998 (revised in 1999) and the Second Edition adopted in 2005. The Standards represent the perspectives of AASWG on the value, knowledge and skill base essential for professionally sound and effective social work practice with groups. They are intended to serve as a guide to social group work practice.

The editors are soliciting abstracts that focus on how the Standards are being used in practice, teaching and research and how they might be further disseminated and revised. Authors of abstracts receiving positive reviews will be invited to submit full papers for final review for the special issue.

Suggested focuses for abstracts include (but are not limited to):

• Use of the Standards in setting up, leading, advancing the purpose or evaluating a group

• Reflections on the Standards from the perspective of group members

• Reflections on or use of the Standards from diverse international perspectives

• Use of the Standards in teaching or supervision of group work

• The use of the Standards in research

The first stage of review are abstracts (up to 1,000 words including references in an email attachment), to Carol S. Cohen at cohen5@adelphi.edu, before October 1, 2011. Responses regarding abstracts will be sent by November 30, 2011, and full papers will be due by February 1, 2011.

Manuscripts of full papers must conform to Social Work with Groups submission guidelines that appear in the Journal or at Taylor and Francis website/site address (search: Social Work with Groups).

We welcome inquiries about potential submissions. Please contact any of the editors by e-mail.
