Classes and Retreats

Overview

A variety of learning and sharing opportunities aims to open program participants to a deepening faith that is open to struggle with questions about Lutheran and Christian identity. We'll study basics of Jesus' teaching and the ways Lutherans apply those teachings to life in the complexities of twenty-first century North America. Classes and retreats aim to assist in discipling -- not just in teaching facts but in wrestling with questions. The program may be adjusted along the way as seems most helpful to both the leaders and participants.

  • BASICS: BIG THEMES IN SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION -- four weeks in February 2002

  • ENGAGING THE WORLD AND CULTURE -- eight days in the U.K. over Spring Break 2002

  • DEVELOPING ONE'S OWN QUESTIONS -- one-to-one conversations, readings, journalling

  • FAITH IN ACTION -- a retreat to coastal Maine for reflections on faith in daily life

  • TAKING IT TO THE STREETS -- combining summer correspondence, a planning retreat, and a project determined and led by program participants during the Fall term of 2002

  • TELLING THE STORY -- sharing program experiences and learnings with the larger church (in congregations Winter/Spring 2003)

Notes

At the beginning and end of the program, participants will take a survey exploring basic themes of Scripture, Tradition, and personal experiences with the Church. There is no "score" one must achieve to enter (or to leave!) the program -- this simply is a tool to explore teaching effectiveness.

All participants are expected to be present for the full program and all its activities. Please contact Pastor Joanne Engquist if you have questions about your availability for retreats or other events.
