Purchasing Computers
Our office can and will provide recommendations for computer systems to meet your requirements either for your office, lab or personal use. The University has a computer store known as University Computers which has entered into agreements with computer manufacturers such as Dell, HP and IBM. Our office typically endorses and recommends Dell for all your computer needs because of their reputation and the service guarantee.
If you are interested in purchasing a system and have something in mind or would like to see some options, please contact our office at eng-rt@bu.edu. Alternatively, you could visit http://www.bu.edu/engit/dellpremier/ and configure a system or a number of systems and add it to a cart. This system will allow you to save an E-Quote. After creating an E-Quote, if you would like someone from our team to review it, simply send an e-mail to eng-rt@bu.edu including the E-Quote number and the e-mail address usedto create the E-Quote. If you are satisfied with your selection(s), then you can simply include the E-Quote number on a requisition made out to University Computers, 533 Commonwealth Avenue. If you are a not directly responsible for making purchases, please give this information to your financial administrator.
Purchasing Peripherals
We do not have any particular recommendations on peripheral devices except for printers. For heterogenous environment, our office recommends Hewlett Packard (HP) printers due to its popularity and support on campus. Recently, we have begun endorsing Dell Printers because their extended warranty service and namely because of their price point. If you are looking to purchase a printer and are not quite sure what to buy, please contact our office at eng-rt@bu.edu.
When you are ready to make a purchase, please contact whomever is responsible for making purchases in your department, office or lab.
Purchasing Software
There are a number of applications that either the University, College or your repestive department(s) has/have a site license for. These applications DO NOT include Microsoft Windows or Apple operating systems or applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, FileMaker Pro, etc. Many systems that are purchased come with an operating system license that are technically NOT transferrable.
If you would like to upgrade your Microsoft Windows 9x or 2000 to Windows XP, you must purchase a license (with media, if necessary) from University Computers. University Computers has negotiated the reduced cost for most Windows and Macintosh operating systems and applications such as Windows XP Professional, Mac OS X (Panther), Microsoft Office, FileMaker Professional, iLife '05, etc.
Here is the current list of applications available to individuals either for free or a small nominal yearly fee:
LabVIEW
Matlab
Mathematica
X-Win32
Abaqus 6.5 (by request only)
