SPH Metcalf Cup Winner Dr. Wayne LaMorte Speaks at Updates in Dental Medicine

updates-12-200On Monday, June 25, 2012, the Updates in Dental Medicine Conference was held in Hiebert Lounge. GSDM Professor and Chair of General Dentistry Dr. Judith Jones hosted the annual conference. GSDM faculty and Extramural Program preceptors were welcomed for an informative day. AS 14 and DMD 15 students were also in attendance.

In his welcoming remarks, Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter said, “Today’s Conference marks another important step in our Faculty Development Program that is aimed at fulfilling strategic goal 8: recruit and retain an excellent and diverse faculty and staff.”

Dr. Jones said, “The keynote speaker, Dr. Wayne LaMorte provided a stimulating presentation on teaching critical thinking in the classroom and the clinic. He fielded many thoughtful questions, after which Dr. Neil Fleisher led a lively discussion on how we can do a better job teaching critical thinking.” She continued, “Drs. Celeste Kong and John Guarente discussed accreditation and the Applied Strategic Plan, followed by Drs. Ronni Schnell, Carl McManama and Louis Brown, focusing on self-evaluation as critical thinking. Last but not least, Dr. Paul Farsai and Ms. Catherine Sarkis discussed how we are evaluating ethics and professionalism from the the classroom to the clinic.”

Dr. Jones looks forward to hosting many more interesting faculty development conferences in the years ahead.
