Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 8/7/20

During the weekend of August 8:

  • On Saturday, a small crew of carpenters will continue working in the GSDM building when there are fewer occupants, focusing their work in stairwells and other areas on the second and third floors typically occupied during the week.
  • There will be a shut-down of the new dental filtration equipment in the basement of the two-story addition on the north side of the building scheduled from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m.: this will allow for the installation of soundproofing improvements to the first-floor auditorium above.
  • A temporary shut-down of the steam system will occur in the GSDM building on Saturday in order to repair and replace a valve in the basement mechanical room.

During the week starting August 10:

  • There will be no night-shift work this week.
  • Work in the existing offices in the present fourth-floor Patient Treatment Center will continue and the area will be returned to GSDM use at the end of the day on Friday, August 14. Following the completion of this work, crews will be moving their operations to the next work area on the fourth floor, setting up protection for the existing equipment and furniture to allow mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work to begin in this area.
  • Inside the existing bathrooms, wall and floor tile installation will continue on the fourth and seventh floors. Once the tiles are placed, the installation of doors and hardware will follow. Plumbing fixtures and accessories will be added to the bathrooms on the first three floors. Painting will begin on the fifth and sixth floors during this week.
  • Drywall construction will begin in the existing fifth-floor Patient Treatment Center, following last week’s City of Boston inspections of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Placement of new electrical and telecommunications systems will also continue throughout the floor.
  • Upgrades to the existing elevators will continue, with workers installing lights and wiring, as well as devices for the fire alarm system, power, and controls. They will be working within the elevator construction area during this time.

Please consult these additional resources as needed:

  • GSDM COVID-19 information: http://www.bu.edu/dental/covid-19-information/. This webpage is a repository of all communications issued to the school community by the GSDM leadership. It also includes links to the Boston University and Boston University Medical Campus COVID-19 websites.

Please be sure to note all directional signage and markings within the building as you navigate in and around GSDM. Circulation may be revised to accommodate both construction and proper physical distancing as the school continues to evolve plans and operations for the phased re-opening and increased number of people in the school. These actions align with the COVID-19 guidelines issued by state regulatory agencies and by Boston University.

As a reminder, it is important that everyone be mindful about using the designated stairs for upward or downward travel between floors. This is critical to maintaining proper distancing and avoiding crossing paths with others in a narrow area. Each stairway is marked with signage to designate the permissible direction of travel.

We hope that you remain safe and healthy. As always, your safety is imperative!
