Medical Insurance


The Boston University student medical insurance plan is administered by Aetna Student Health. For a detailed description of the student medical insurance plan benefits and for instructions how to use the plan for the 2009/2010 policy year, visit Aetna Student Health’s Web site at www.aetnastudenthealth.com.

Important Information for Charles River Campus Teaching Fellows and Research Assistants and Graduate Students Receiving Trainee Stipends.


Professional Medical, Dermatology and all Dental students:

Professional Medical students (i.e. M.D. candidates), Dermatology students and all Goldman School of Dental Medicine students are automatically enrolled in the Boston University Student PLUS Plan and their student account will be charged for the coverage. These students should visit their school’s web site for information on plan rates and coverage dates.

Students at the Goldman School of Dental Medicine students, visit http://dentalschool.bu.edu/registrar/health-ins-costs.htm.


Visit Aetna Student Health web site for a description of the Boston University Student Plus Plan. Students enrolled in a comparable health insurance plan may file a Medical Insurance Waiver via the Student Link. Medical Insurance must be waived by the Fall 2009 Payment Deadline.

Please be aware that if you do not wish to participate in the Boston University Medical Insurance Plan you must file a Medical Insurance Waiver form each Academic Year.

Students who wish to enroll their dependents on the student medical insurance plan must re-enroll dependents each plan year by the enrollment deadline if they wish to continue their dependents on the plan.


All Other Students:

The Medical Insurance Charge:

Category A -Students required to carry health insurance


The following students are required to participate in a qualifying medical insurance plan:
Students certified as full-time;
Students certified as part-time but registered for 75 percent or more of a full-time course load (nine or more credit hours for most schools);
International exchange visitors (i.e., J1, or J2 visa);
International students (i.e., F1, or F2 visa).

Students in these categories are automatically enrolled in the Boston University Student BASIC Plan and their student accounts are charged for the coverage.

To upgrade to the Student Plus level, visit the Student Link. September 30, 2009, is the final deadline to upgrade to Student Plus for the 2009/2010 Policy Year. Covered students who do not upgrade to Student Plus by September 30, 2009, are not eligible to change plan levels later in the Plan Year.

If the student has a comparable level of health insurance coverage a Medical Insurance Waiver must be completed by the Medical Insurance Waiver deadline to waive participation for the 2009/2010 Plan Year. See Medical Insurance Waiver Guidelines below


Category B. -Other students assessed for medical insurance on their student account.

Some students not in category A above may also have their student account automatically assessed for medical insurance.

If you are not a category A student, but your student account was assessed for medical insurance, you will automatically be enrolled in the Boston University Student BASIC Plan, unless you actively decline (waive) enrollment in the student medical insurance plan by the Medical Insurance Waiver deadline. However; you are not required to carry a comparable level of health insurance coverage.

To upgrade to the Student Plus level, visit the Student Link. September 30, 2009, is the final deadline to upgrade to Student Plus for the 2009/2010 Policy Year. Students who do not upgrade to Student Plus by September 30, 2009, are not eligible to change plan levels later in the Plan Year.


To View Your Own Student Account:

To view your personal medical insurance status, or to waive or confirm the medical insurance charge, visit the Student Link. Please note that only Boston University students with a Kerberos password will be able to view personal information on the Student Link.

NOTE: Students under age 18 cannot file a medical insurance waiver via the Student link. Students under age 18 use the paper Medical Insurance Waiver Form.

Medical Insurance Waiver Guidelines:

Fall 2009:


The medical coverage is effective August 23, 2009, to August 22, 2010. Students are automatically enrolled in the Boston University Student BASIC Plan, at a cost of $1,517.

If the student has a comparable level of health insurance coverage a Medical Insurance Waiver may be completed to waive participation in the plan. The completed Medical Insurance Waiver must be received by Student Accounting Services no later than September 30, 2009, to waive participation for the 2009/2010 academic year. Students who have filed claims against the 2009/2010 plan year are not eligible to file a medical insurance waiver.

Important notice to students who are filing their medical insurance waiver after their registration payment deadline: You must settle the balance due on your student account in full, regardless of whether you plan to file a medical insurance waiver later in September. Otherwise, late fees may accrue on your student account. In addition, students who reside in University Housing on the Charles River Campus will not be permitted to move into on-campus residences until their accounts are settled with Student Accounting Services. Students age 18 and older may file their Medical Insurance Waiver via the Student Link.

Students under 18 years of age are required by Massachusetts state law to obtain the co-signature of a parent or legal guardian in order to waive the insurance. If you are under age 18 click here to download a blank Medical Insurance Waiver Form.

The deadline for covered students to upgrade from Student Basic ($1,517) to Student Plus ($2,067) is September 30, 2009. To upgrade to the Student Plus level, visit the Student Link.
Spring 2010:

Students who attend beginning Spring 2010; students who return from leave of absence Spring 2010; students who increase their part-time course load to seventy-five percent of the full-time load for Spring 2010; or students who change to full-time status for Spring 2010:

The medical coverage is effective January 1, 2010, to August 22, 2010. Students are automatically enrolled in the Boston University Student BASIC Plan, at a cost of $1,042.

If the student has a comparable level of health insurance coverage a Medical Insurance Waiver may be completed to waive participation in the plan. The completed Medical Insurance Waiver must be received by Student Accounting Services no later than FEBRUARY 1, 2010, to waive participation for the Spring 2010 semester.

Students age 18 and older may file their Medical Insurance Waiver via the Student Link.

The deadline for new Spring 2010 students to upgrade from Student Basic ($1,042) to Student Plus ($1,400) is February 1, 2010. To upgrade to the Student Plus level, visit the Student Link.
All Students:

Please be aware that if you do not wish to participate in the Boston University Medical Insurance Plan you must file a medical insurance waiver form each Academic Year.

Students should compare the benefits, limitations, and exclusions of their alternate health insurance plan with those provided by the Boston University Student Medical Insurance plan before filing their Medical Insurance Waiver.

It is important that the student realize that the burden of proof that the alternate insurance is adequate falls on the student, not the University. If you do not know whether your coverage meets the above conditions, contact your health insurance plan administrator to get current, accurate information about your plan before completing the Medical Insurance Waiver.

Requesting Medical Insurance Coverage:

Fall 2009:

REQUESTING MEDICAL INSURANCE COVERAGE:


Students who waived insurance may reinstate coverage in the plan during the open enrollment period via the Student Link or by contacting Student Accounting Services in writing prior to the enrollment deadline date.

The Open Enrollment Deadline for the Annual Policy is September 30, 2009. This is also the final deadline to upgrade the Student Plus level.

Spring 2010:

New Spring students who waived insurance may reinstate coverage in the plan during the open enrollment period via the Student Link or by contacting Student Accounting Services in writing prior to the enrollment deadline date.

The Open Enrollment Deadline for new students entering Boston University in the Spring 2010 semester is February 1, 2010. This is also the final deadline for new Spring students to upgrade the Student Plus.

Part-time Students:

Part-time students, who have not been automatically enrolled in the student medical insurance plan, may do so by contacting Student Accounting Services in writing prior to the enrollment deadline date. Written requests for coverage may be faxed to Student Accounting Services at 617-353-3313. Email requests for insurance coverage may be sent to insmed@bu.edu.

The student should include his or her BU id number with the request and specify the level of coverage (Student Basic or Student Plus).

The Open Enrollment Deadline for the Annual Policy is September 30, 2009.
The Open Enrollment Deadline for new students entering Boston University in the Spring 2010 semester is February 1, 2010.

Dependent Coverage:

Students who are interested in adding their dependents to the student medical insurance plan, please click here.

Students who wish to enroll their dependents on the student medical insurance plan must re-enroll dependents each plan year by the enrollment deadline if they wish to continue their dependents on the plan. Please aware that dependents do not have access to Student Health Services.


HOW TO REQUEST FALL ONLY COVERAGE: OPTION FOR STUDENTS GRADUATING IN JANUARY 2010, CELOP, BU GLOBAL, VISITING STUDY ABROAD, and VISITING EXCHANGE STUDENTS.

The following students are eligible to request their Boston University student medical insurance 2009/2010 annual premium be prorated to cover the Fall 2009 semester only:
  1. Boston University degree candidates graduating officially in January 2010
  2. CELOP students registered through Boston University for the Fall 2009 semester only
  3. BU Global students registered through Boston University for the Fall 2009 semester only
  4. Exchange students registered through Boston University for the Fall 2009 semester only
  5. Visiting students in a BU study abroad or internship program registered through Boston University for the Fall 2009 semester only
Students in these categories may request that the student medical insurance coverage terminate on December 31, 2009, at 11:59 p.m. Eligible students who wish to apply for the Fall 2009 semester coverage option must sign and return the Medical Insurance Premium Adjustment Form to Student Accounting Services no later than December 31, 2009. If the request is approved, the Fall 2009 student medical insurance charge will be reduced for students enrolled in the BASIC Plan from $1,517 to $669, and for students enrolled in the PLUS Plan from $2,067 to $878.
