Genetics

Scientists and clinicians at our Center are currently working on several different areas of genetics research.

Dr. Lindsay Farrer, Chief of the Genetics Program at BU School of Medicine, leads the MIRAGE Study, which is evaluating the role of both genetic and non-genetic risk factors in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to these ongoing clinical research studies, our Center also has a well-respected Transgenic Mouse Core, led by Dr. Lee Goldstein and Dr. Alpaslan Dedeoglu. This core is responsible for overseeing the DNA isolation, storage, and genotyping of biological samples collected for research by the Clinical Core.  The Transgenic Mouse Core also breed, characterize, and maintain mice with several of the rare genetic mutations that cause AD. These mice serve as models for exploring the biological basis of Alzheimer’s disease and possible treatment methods for humans.
