State Rep. Liz Miranda, 2021 FYSOP Speaker

BU’s First Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) is a weeklong program of community service, education, reflection, and social activities that brings new students to campus before the semester begins. Begun in 1989 and going strong, it kicked off with an opening ceremony Monday evening, with Massachusetts State Representative Liz Miranda (D-5th Suffolk) addressing this year’s almost 500 FYSOP volunteers and returning student staff leaders, who are working for the week at one of 53 community partners in the Greater Boston area that address a broad range of causes. Roxbury native Miranda was elected to the Legislature in 2018 and reelected in 2020. This year’s student volunteers, who had the option to participate either in person or virtually, are engaged through social justice education, community service, and critical reflection.
