  1. Twain was, indeed, speaking about New England when he made this remark in December 1876 at the New England Dinner in New York. It was widely reported in newspapers at the time and in books for many years after. You can see one example, from the New Orleans Republican, at https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83016555/1876-12-31/ed-1/seq-6.pdf . Twain’s speech is reproduced beginning at the bottom of the next to last column. (For accuracy’s sake it should be noted that he said “inside of four-and-twenty hours” not ” inside of 24 hours.”) – Ken Liss, BU Libraries
