Jose Velho, Senior Experimental Machinist at the Scientific Instrument Facility, carefully augments a vacuum chamber used in the muon storage ring at Fermi National Accelerator Lab. The pieces of the chamber were fabricated in the BU SIF in the 1990s, and were recently sent back for modifications to improve the accelerator's functionality and help with the lab's search of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The Scientific Instrument Facility

In the 1990s, BU’s Scientific Instrument Facility fabricated pieces of a vacuum chamber in the muon storage ring at the US Department of Energy’s Fermilab. SIF senior experimental machinist Jose Velho works on the chamber, sent back recently for modifications to improve its function in the lab’s search for physics beyond the Standard Model.
