  1. A wonderful story! For more great research on marathon history, see our article on Korean runners who won the Boston marathon in 1950, placing first, second, and third. This was at the beginning of the Korean War. Because of racism, Koreans were not allowed to run in the marathon again the next year–denied this opportunity by Walter Brown, who is mentioned in the above article. So Walter Brown may have founded the Beanpot and the Celtics, but he didn’t let Koreans run the marathon in 1951. See http://www.bu.edu/cgcm/research/korean-diaspora-project/issues/boston-marathon/.

  2. My Dad and I attended the Marathon from about 1950 to 1960. We watched the start of the race, jumped into the car, drove to about the midpoint, watched the runners go by, and then drove to about a mile from the end. I recall a small field of runners and so few observers that we were able to stand on the curb to watch them go by. I cannot find the number of participants for that time period and am wondering if my memories are accurate. Do you know where I can find those statistics?
