Nick Bates, Assistant Director, Thurman Center Networks, was interviewed for WTBU’s recent story, “Unpacking Injustice: How the BU Community is Reacting to the Death of George Floyd.” Nick urges the
BU community and beyond to develop a deeper understanding of systemic racial injustice:
“Many of us need to do our due diligence in reading and understanding these issues as issues beyond issues that black and non-black people of color face. If we begin to read into them a bit and understand how these issues are the result and product of a system that has oppressed the people that we’ve mentioned I think we can begin to understand them a bit more. I think we have to do our own due diligence that if you don’t identify as black or a person of color, y
ou have to understand the role that people that look like you play in upholding the system.”
