“For this is why we were born: People, all people, belong to each other, and he who shuts himself away diminishes himself, and he who shuts another away from him destroys himself.”
- Howard ThurmanImpact @ BU
The Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground was founded by Dean Emeritus George K. Makechnie in 1986 to preserve and share the legacy of Dr. Howard Thurman. Howard Thurman was a man of religion, a world-renowned educator, a philosopher and a poet, and Dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University from 1953 to 1965. With his philosophies on pluralism, democracy, and community, Thurman influenced a generation of thought leaders in the Civil Rights Movement, including Martin Luther King Jr. The Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground continues the legacy of Howard Thurman by championing experiences and conversations that create connections, build community, and encourage people to ask the big important questions that life has to offer. Real conversations. Shared experiences. Individuals coming together to solve problems. All of these things are central to the mission of the Howard Thurman Center at BU. If you’re looking for a way to make a personal impact in the Howard Thurman Center’s mission, please consider donating. Donations help expand the scope of the Center’s work in many ways, including additional resources for student-run weekly programs and big annual events like the MLK Jr. Day Luncheon.
