Study of Risk Factors for Myocardial Infarction in Men under Age 55

Objectives

To evaluate the risk of first myocardial infarction (MI) in men to male pattern baldness and other factors, including cigarette smoking, alcoholic beverage consumption, vasectomy, and body habitus (including body fat distribution).

Methods

Cases of myocardial infarction in men under 55 were identified through the coronary care units of participating hospitals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Cases and controls (men admitted for other diagnoses) were interviewed in hospital for information on the exposures of interest and on risk factors for myocardial infarction. Discharge summaries were obtained for all participants.

Results

Myocardial infarction risk increased as the extent of vertex scalp baldness increased.
