Fall Retreat 2021
The Power of Nonviolence
November 12, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
The 2021 Fall Retreat will be held in person on Friday, November 12th from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Our focus this year is: “The Power of Nonviolence.”
Violence, whether it be hostile, angry speech at school board meetings, physical assaults on Asian Americans, or national armies shooting their own citizens is devastating and dividing our countries. But there is a tradition of nonviolence, often rooted in faith communities, that has stood up to injustice while resisting fighting violence with violence.
This year, The Tom Porter Religion and Conflict Transformation Program Fall Retreat will focus on The Power of Nonviolence, drawing on international nonviolent movements, individual nonviolent responses to violence, nonviolent communication, and specific strategies for nonviolent resistance. Theological frames for nonviolence from diverse traditions will be explored as a foundation of religion and conflict transformation. The session will feature the following nationally known presenters and local activists.
- Lisa Mullins, National Anchor for All Things Considered, WBUR Public Radio
- David Freudberg, Host of Humankind, National Public Radio and producer of the radio series, “The Power of Non-Violence’
- Betty Burke, Trainer in Nonviolent Communication, Board Member, Cambridge Insight Meditation Center
- Arnie Albert, Strategist and Activist, American Friends Service Committee
- A Panel of STH international students
Join us for a day of learning and practicing strategies of nonviolence!
