Lab 6 (Properties of waves and orbitals), lab 7 (The role of time in atoms and light), and lab 8 (SOE: Symmetry, overlap, and energy), are guided computer explorations of quantum concepts in chemistry. These labs concern chapters 4 and 5 of ACS Chemistry, and chapters 2 and pages 117--129 of chapter 4 of Notes on General Chemistry, 3e.

You may work by yourself on your own computer or, preferably, with study partners.

Since these computer explorations are done on your own, there are no lab meetings in SCI/268 during the three weeks of these labs. However, your lab TF will be available to answer your questions for the first hour during your regular lab time. (For example, if you lab section is 4:30-7:30pm, your lab TF will be in the lab at 4:30-5:30pm). However, lab TFs for all 8:00-11:00am lab sections will be in the lab at 9:00-10:00am. We will email the detail schedule of all these lab times shortly.

Please be sure to complete the preparation of your computer described below no later than Monday, October 26.

Workbook: Exploring Quantum Concepts in Chemistry

The workbook for these labs is Exploring Quantum Concepts in Chemistry, by the CH101 staff. It is available for purchase at the Boston University Bookstore, 4th floor information desk.

  • Lab 6 is section I. Wave investigations, pages 1--30, due Monday, November 2.
  • Lab 7 is section II. Time dependent electron waves, pages 31--58, due Monday November 16.
  • Lab 8 is section III. Symmetry, Overlap, and Energy, pages 59--90, due Monday November 30.

Please complete all pages of each section.

Please note that, whether you work on your own or with others, you must complete in your own workbook all pages for each of the labs because at the end of the semester the entire workbook should be submitted  for grading.

Grading

Your report for each lab is to be handed in at the post test that follows that lab. For these reports please complete the corresponding report forms below, using your workbook results.

In addition to your separate reports submitted for each lab at its post test, your entire Exploring Quantum Concepts in Chemistry workbook will also be graded during the final lab of the semester (lab 9, Lewis structure and molecular shapes), the week of December 1. Your workbook grade will be based on the quality and completeness of your work. Your completed workbook is required to receive credit for the three computer labs.

Software: Exploring Quantum Concepts in Chemistry

The software for each of the labs is at

http://quantumconcepts.bu.edu/software/applets/

To run the applets or applications, you will need to have Java 5.0 or greater working on your computer. The odds are that you have Java installed. If the applets or applications do not work on your computer, refer to the section below for installing Java from the Sun website.

If you do not have a personal computer that can run Java software, it will be available on 6 PC computers and 14 Mac computers in the College of Arts and Science Computing Lab, CAS/330.

Software: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0

Java Downloads for Windows
