Exercise is Medicine – This course is intended for the practicing physical therapist who wants to improve upon their prescription of therapeutic exercise. It will build upon the clinician’s knowledge of functional anatomy, biomechanics, neurophysiology, motor adaptations in the presence of pain, structure and function of connective and muscle tissue, and physiology of tissue repair. Current principles of tissue stress and optimal load to promote remodeling of biological structures will be covered.
Emphasis will be on the specific goals in exercise development using acuity, tissue status and functional needs of the individual. Students will practice exercise testing, development and adaptation based upon specific patient needs, function and response. An emphasis will be placed on task based prescription to promote optimal movement and return to function. Patient compliance and strategies to promote behavior change will also be discussed.
