5 Tips for a Successful Semester

by Taylor Love

The beginning of a semester is always exciting. It brings new classes, connections, and opportunities (with PRLab being one of them). If you want to know how to succeed, take a look at these five tips on how to get started on the right foot this semester.

Get to know your client

The first step to success is doing your research. To prepare for your new role as an Account Executive, get acquainted with your client and gain a thorough understanding of who they are. What is their product? Who is their usual target audience? What does their social media presence say about them? These are a few questions that are all great launching points to help you become an expert on who you’re working with this semester.

Sharpen your skills

One of the innovative aspects of PRLab is that students are the ones at the helm, and they get to put their knowledge to the test. While you might think you’re already a pro at a certain aspect of public relations, there’s always room to grow! Use this time in PRLab to improve upon what you already know. Your writing can never be too good and the world of media relations is always evolving. Be sure to keep your skills in top shape!

Step out of your comfort zone

It goes without saying that PR professionals need to be a jack of all trades; it comes with the job. Given the large scope of work we have to tackle, we may be better at certain things; and that’s nothing to be ashamed of! PRLab provides the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and to try new things. If you have a knack for writing and copyediting, volunteer to design some graphics for your client’s social media feed. Remember that you get out of PRLab what you put into it. Be sure to expand your horizons and take advantage of the opportunities to learn and try new things.

Time Management is key

PRLab is only a fraction of your schedule, but it takes a lot of time and dedication. Time management is what will help keep you on track as you continue to go to school and work on your account. Whether you love a physical journal or the calendar app on your phone, making notes of key dates will make all the difference and allow you to stay on top of your work and focus on your grind.

Bond with your team

PRLab is a commitment, but it shouldn’t be stressful. Find the time to have fun with your team! Don’t be afraid to meet up with your team to have coffee, a lunch date or just to have fun outside of the classroom. Not only does bonding create a friendly environment, but it also allows your teammates to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This way, your team will be able to work together, problem solve and make progress toward a certain goal.

While PRLab is quite the commitment, it’s also an extraordinary time and an amazing opportunity. Be sure to lean in, soak in all you can and be sure to have fun!
