Mark Lucas

Mark came to BU this summer from Eastman, Georgia. He is a junior at Middle Georgia State University where he studies Biomedical Engineering. His decision to apply to the REU Program stemmed from his desire to know what it’s like to work in a lab.

Developing Methods for Simulating Osteoarthritis: Mark worked in Michael Albro’s lab with Erik Ersland (mentor) and Juliet Parry (RET). For his project, Mark used a biaxial bioreactor to stimulate the physics environment of the human knee. The lab compressed cow cartilage with the bioreactor in order to further analyze Osteoarthritis (OA).

“It’s a very young lab but I think the research they’re doing can really change people’s lives.”

After undergrad, he hopes to attend graduate school and study Biorobotics, Oncology or Epidemiology Research. His career goals include starting and owning a Biomedical Engineering company that focuses on biorobotics, bioinstrumentation, oncology, epidemiology and other areas of biotechnological research.
