PARTISAN REVIEW
PSR:
It
is eas ier if one has no t been oppressed by it.
K :
I guess that's so. Didn 't you ever get any pleasure from France a t all ?
PSR:
My love life there was no t bad, but I don't want
to
talk about
th at. I thought we were going to ta lk about educa ti o n . You 're a very
odd sort of interviewer.
K:
There are quite eno ugh of the non- odd kind , I think. As for
educa tio n , everything is quite obv iously connected to it, don't you
agree?
PSR:
My love life in Paris seemed relatively unrel a ted to educa ti on as a
ma tter of fact. Though I did " lea rn " a few things.
K:
Wha t?
PSR:
I said, I beli eve, earli er, that I didn't want to ta lk a bout tha t.
K:
An interview th at is no t completely free is a stunted sort of inter-
view.
PSR :
Call it whatever you like, I don't want to discuss my love life in
Paris.
K:
Do you feel those are thin gs a man sho uld no t ta lk abo ut with
ano ther man ?
PSR:
I certainl y wouldn 't ta lk about them with a woman.
K:
Not under an y circumstances?
PSR:
None.
K:
How do you feel your edu ca ti on has influenced you in this?
PSR :
I don 't see what my educa ti on has to do with it.
K:
You were educated in a French school here in Morocco, were you
not?
PSR:
Yes. At the L ycee Muhamed Cinq.
K:
Were your teachers French or Arab?
PSR:
They were, without excep ti o n , except for the lone relig ious
instructor, French .
K:
Was all the in struction in French?
PSR:
Yes, except in religi on. Actually the reli gious instructor would
tell us about o ther subjects too, and they were mo re fascin ating to us
when he did so, because they were being spoken of in our own, real
language. Every thing we lea rn ed in French seemed ephemeral, not
rea ll y to touch us.
K:
The girl, or girls, you loved in Paris, were they French or Arab
girls?
PSR:
I don 't see what that has
to
do with educa ti on. I wi sh you'd in
fact try to stick to the subject. I noti ce th a t I'm beginning to enjoy
talking a bout it.
K:
How can a man feel that hi s love life is unrela ted to hi s educa ti on?
