GEORGE SANTAYANA ON
EXISTENTIALISM:
An Unpublished Letter
This letter, printed below for the
first time, was occasioned by a
singularly distraught and twentieth–
century letter w hich I addressed
to Santayana on February
4, 1948.
My letter was prompted by my hav–
ing just previously completed the
reading of most of his published
work as well as having just sub–
mitted a dissertation on Kierke–
gaard to the Department of Philos–
ophy at the Univ ersity of Chicago.
No two thinkers that one can recall
offhand are more dissimilar than
Kierkegaard and Santayana. I was
enormously curious to know what
Santay ana's reactions were to Kier–
kegaard, the Chrisitan existential–
ists, and the general existential em–
phasis on subjective cognition. The
letter, published with the permis–
sion of Santayana's executor, Mr.
Daniel Cory, was his reply.

Dear Mr. Cohen: Your letter
