Boston University’s School of Theology offers a Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program in Transformational Leadership, structured as a three-year, low‑residency hybrid. Students engage in robust online coursework such as Transformational Leadership, Contextual Analysis, Research Methods, and a Directed Study Project while meeting in Boston for intensive in-person seminars each August and January. Classes emphasize peer learning, contextual reflection, and practical application of ministry theory through interactive web conferences, live chats, and access to BU’s extensive library resources. The program is open to those with an MDiv (or equivalent) and three years of professional ministry, and it culminates in a project that often addresses real-world community needs.
The School of Theology also delivers a fully online Master of Arts in Religion and Public Leadership (MARPL). This 32-credit graduate degree was launched for Fall 2022 and prepares students—across varied vocations—to creatively engage in public life and lead faith communities, weaving together foundational coursework and tailored electives in areas like ecological justice, conflict transformation, and disability ministry. Online cohorts connect through weekly worship, virtual lectures, and community-building exercises. MARPL students benefit from scholarship opportunities (such as a 25% first-year tuition discount for the class entering by September 2025) and receive full access to library services and faculty support.
