Neuro* Experience Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (NEUROP)

The Neuro* Experience Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (NEUROP) is designed to launch Boston University undergraduates into meaningful, multi-semester research experiences across the Neuro* ecosystem, spanning neuroscience, neurophotonics, neurotechnology, neuroengineering, and translational neuroscience on both the Charles River and Medical campuses. Students begin with a focused certification program that prepares them for real research by covering lab culture, safety, ethics and IRB awareness, device handling, data management, computational workflows, and foundational skills for working with human and animal research. After certification, NEUROP provides personalized lab placement support, ongoing mentorship, and community programming to help students thrive throughout their multi-year engagement. Participants develop career-building competencies in experimental design, quantitative data analysis, instrumentation and hardware integration, coding and statistics, scientific writing, teamwork and project management, and communicating science to diverse audiences. These skills translate directly to multiple career paths including graduate programs (PhD, MD, MD/PhD), biotech and med-tech R&D, clinical research, neurotech start-ups, data science and AI, human performance and ergonomics, and science policy and entrepreneurship. NEUROP students leave the program not only with hands-on experience, but with strong professional networks and the potential for impactful letters of recommendation from faculty PIs who know their work first-hand — a critical asset when applying to competitive jobs, fellowships, and graduate or medical schools.

NEUROP accepts a limited number of students into the certification program each year to ensure meaningful mentorship and high-quality research placements. We are launching in January 2026 and are currently accepting applications. The first certification cohort will begin in mid-February 2026, with additional cohorts starting at the beginning of subsequent semesters. The application portal will remain open on a rolling basis; newly accepted students will be notified prior to the start of each semester’s certification program.
