A (deeper) Look into the Neural Networks of Epilepsy
Epilepsy affects nearly 50 million people worldwide and the optimal treatment strategies for epilepsy remain elusive. To advance therapeutic management of this disease requires a more detailed characterization of its spatiotemporal dynamics. In this talk, we will examine the role of epileptic discharges (or “spikes”) in identifying surgical targets for epilepsy and disrupting healthy brain rhythms, and we will examine how spikes propagate across the brain during seizures. We will discuss how combining clinical, experimental, and computational approaches can help us understand the neural networks of epilepsy and address challenges in the field.
