Optical Pioneer Jerome Mertz Is BU’s 2020 Innovator of the Year

“It’s easy to come up with ideas but it’s hard to make those ideas have an impact,” said Jerome Mertz, our newest recipient of BU’s Innovator of the Year Award. Mertz, holds six issued patents for technologies that have greatly advanced microscopic imaging quality and capabilities. His inventions throughout his time at BU have made it easier and faster to get better images of thick breast, heart, and brain tissue. This effort has helped clinicians understand what is happening inside the human body to a greater degree.
