MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation: Grants available for any organization focused on HIV prevention led by young people!
A Staying Alive Foundation Grant comes with a small amount of funding, Staying Alive materials (including programming and teaching kits), a small fund to buy technical media equipment, a local mentor, a personal grant manager, as well as training and development.
They support organizations led by young people between the ages of 15 and 27 that work in HIV prevention. They are interested in organizations that are start-ups and do not have much support, financial or otherwise. They are much more likely to fund an organization that has little or no existing funding to date, rather than those with several funders on board.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Awards Young Leaders who Hold Promise for the Future
As part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s commemorative activities to honor its 40 years of grant-making, it established the Young Leader Awards: Recognizing Leadership for a Healthier America<http://e2.ma/click/nc5bc/7f1yod/7vtjs>. This awards program recognizes up to 10 individuals, 40 years of age and under, who offer great promise for leading the way to improved health and health care for all Americans. Each winner will receive an individual award of $40,000.
Third-party nominations will be accepted until July 16, 2012. To view the Call for Nominations and complete information about selection criteria and nomination requirements, visit RWJFyoungleaderawards.org. Award winners will be announced at an October 25/26, 2102 RWJF conference in Princeton, NJ.
The Young Leader Awards will recognize leaders who have demonstrated the characteristics needed to improve health and health care through leadership and innovation. The characteristics – a combination of personal attributes, commitment to health and health care and successful experience – demonstrate the nominee’s ability to lead and innovate and they signal the potential to become a greater leader in the coming years.
Some of the characteristics a nominee will have demonstrated include:
* The ability to bring others together to achieve results greater than what a single person could bring about;
* The capacity to apply learning beyond the boundaries of a single discipline;
* Has developed great ideas into products, services or policies that have made a difference in health and health care;
* Made an impact on health and health care that extends beyond an initial group of people to reach additional populations and will likely be sustainable over the decades ahead.

Lynne Stevens Award for Research on Responding to Violence Against Women application due by March 15th

| The Family Medicine Department’s Lynne Stevens Award for Research on Responding to Violence Against Women Background: Lynne Stevens was Director of the Responding to Violence Against Women Program and an Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. Stevens specialized in evaluation of the quality of care offered in medical settings to women impacted by partner and sexual violence. She died in 2009 at the age of 63. The Award Program: To continue her work in this important area, the Department of Family Medicine, with the help of a generous donation, has established an annual grant for a research or practice improvement project. The focus should be on the care received in the Boston University system by women who experience partner and sexual violence, including the hospitals, student health services and community health centers affiliated with Boston Medical Center. This is a University-wide program, so all faculty, staff, trainees and students of BU, BMC and affiliated community health centers and services are eligible to apply. Non-clinicians are encouraged to seek endorsement by practicing providers with a letter of support attesting to clinical relevance. Proposals will be reviewed by a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) including experts in the field.
The Award Process: Applicants are asked to submit a concept paper of no more than 3 pages to the committee via email by March 15, 2012 to Janice.Robbins@bmc.org. This concept paper should include the objectives of the study or project design, a description of how the results will be evaluated and used to improve clinical services, a timeline and budget. The project should be completed within a year, and the budget should not exceed $ 5,000. The TAC will review the concept papers, and ask for more detail from one or more applicants. The award will be announced in May and funded following any indicated IRB approval. BU Women’s Guild Scholarships Available: Applications Due March 16th!
The Boston University Women’s Guild Scholarships
The Boston University Women’s Guild invites all BU women graduate students 30 years of age and over to apply for a Boston University Women’s Guild scholarship. As a long-standing women’s organization on campus, established in 1956, the Guild is pleased to honor the talented women students in our midst each year.
The Boston University Women’s Guild scholarships provide both aid and encouragement to women 30 and over enrolled in University graduate programs. Guild scholarships, unlike many others, do not require U.S. citizenship or (recognizing that women often have other responsibilities) full-time enrollment. Awards consist of the endowed Katherine Connor McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship and others funded year-by-year by donations from Guild members and friends. In the past, Guild scholarships have averaged about $1,000 per award.
Winners have ranged in age from 30 to 58 and have come from all BU schools offering graduate programs and from many countries. Extraordinary expenses that awards have helped pay include child care, support of parents and parents-in-law, and treatment of serious chronic conditions, as well as tuition, production costs for thesis films, and travel and other research needs.

Reminder: Katie Evans Memorial Scholarship: Feb 15 deadline
Consider applying for the Katie Evans Memorial Scholarship as you begin to finalize your international field work plans for 2012.
Up to $3,000 can be applied toward a graduate student's fieldwork project, and student leaders can gain up to $500 in support of the completion of their education, attendance at conferences, and individual projects.
Don't wait! Deadline is Wednesday, February 15.

Full-tuition stipend available through BU African Studies Center
BU African Studies Center FLAS Application Deadline is Feb 15th. This award offers full-tuition stipend for US Citizens & permanent residents who take an African Language and African area studies course each semester. African Studies Center expects to make 2 or 3 awards for next academic year.

The Director of the African Studies Center indicates:
“I expect to have 2 or 3 FLAS fellowships available for new students next year, so while the competition will be spirited, it is certainly worth sending your students for us to consider. Our deadline for applications is February 15, and our financial aid committee expects to meet the first week in March.”
“Recipients are required to take an African language course and an African area studies course (which can be in their home department) each semester that they receive the grant. When we offer a FLAS fellowship, we commit to funding a student for 4-5 years (on FLAS while they are taking courses full-time, on GRS funds subsequently). We will give preference to students interested in studying languages that we regularly teach - Amharic, Arabic, Hausa, Kiswahili, Wolof, isiXhosa, and isiZulu.”
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
The applications for the 2012-2013 David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available at http://www.borenawards.org. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations. Interested BU Students should contact the BU Representative.
For the second year in a row, the African Languages Initiative offers Boren Scholars and Fellows the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of, and proficiency in, African languages and cultures. Through the initiative, funding is available for Boren Scholars and Fellows to study one of the following languages at the University of Florida’s summer 2012 program prior to commencing their overseas Boren funded program.
• Akan/Twi
• Swahili
• Wolof
• Yoruba
• Zulu
In addition, African Languages Initiative overseas programs are available for intensive language and cultural study during fall semester 2012 in the following countries.
• Mozambique (Portuguese)
• Tanzania (Swahili)
• Nigeria (Yoruba)
• South Africa (Zulu)
