BUSM Global Health Speaker Series, Dr. Heidi Behforouz on Community Health Workers in Primary Care

Join Dr. Heidi Behforouz,director of Partners In Health’s (PIH) Prevention and Access to Care and Treatment (PACT) program (http://www.pih.org/pages/usa/), as she speaks on the PACT's findings that well-supported and well-integrated CHWs enable care teams to improve their patients’ health outcomes and reduce expenditures on healthcare. Based on the accompagnateur model pioneered in rural Haiti, the PACT project focuses on effectively integrating community health workers (CHWs) into primary care and mental health teams. PACT partners with clinics to develop the infrastructure, culture, quality improvement tools, and skills necessary to support effective CHW interventions for the most vulnerable patients. Dr. Behforouz will speak about PACT's findings that well-supported and well-integrated CHWs enable care teams to improve their patients’ health outcomes and reduce expenditures on healthcare.

As the global movement towards universal health coverage (UHC) continues to grow, numerous countries are experimenting with models for moving toward UHC utilizing health financing mechanisms to protect against financial risk, increase access to essential health services, and improve health outcomes. This Series highlights multiple facets of what is happening with UHC globally including a perspective on the historical evolution of the economics and policy behind it, evidence on the effects of universal health coverage UHC on health outcomes, and an exploration of progress towards universal health coverage UHC in nine Asian and African countries.

Global Nursing Caucus Conference
Engaging and Empowering Nurses in Global Health
Join us for a two-day conference for nurses interested in global health. We will be discussing a range of topics based on the following sub-themes:
Nursing education and training initiatives
Skills for promoting health in resource constrained settings
Partnerships and collaborations to advance health and the role of nursing
Our keynote speakers are Toni Hays RN, PhD and Barbara Smith PhD, RN, FAAN. Toni is the president of Regis College and has worked extensively on developing the Regis College Haiti Project. Barbara is a professor at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing. She has worked on many international nursing projects and research studies and is currently the principle investigator in at study Assessing Risk of Exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens among Health Care Workers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Registration Fees:
Attendee: $130 early registration, $150 after October 1
Student rate: $65 early registration, $75 after October 1
Scholarship Information:
A limited number of student scholarships are available. To apply for a scholarship you must fulfill the following criteria:
- Student actively enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate nursing or public health program, in good standing
- Demonstrated interest in global health
- Willing to volunteer and help at the conference
- Have a professor send an email (from their school account) attesting you fulfill the above criteria.

Are you interested in Southern African languages? A group of students, faculty, and staff would like to start an bi-weekly conversation group. It would be a great opportunity to speak and compare Southern African languages and share resources in an informal environment.
