Opportunity ID: 01-Halim
Project Title: A Social Norms Intervention to Prevent the Perpetration of Partner Violence in Bangladesh: Development of Instruments and Collection of Preliminary Data
Faculty Mentor: Nafisa Halim
Description Statement:
In Bangladesh, one in three women and men agree that intimate partner violence (IPV) is justified if a woman deviates from her normative role as wife, daughter-in-law, and mother, indicating that approval of violence in families is deeply entrenched in Bangladeshi culture.
Drs. Nafisa Halim and Emily Rothman are conducting a qualitative study in Bangladesh to understand men’s attitudes on: (a) IPV perpetration against women, (b) causes and consequences of IPV in Bangladesh, (c) IPV prevention strategies, and (d) mode of transmission for IPV prevention intervention. The study will inform the development of a social norm change intervention to change men’s attitudes about the acceptability of their own IPV perpetration, and IPV perpetration by other men in the community, and to build intolerance for IPV among men in the Bangladesh urban slum setting.
