Practicum Position: Project Manager
Project Description: We are seeking a highly organized, self-motivated leader to help run a childhood nutrition project in Lima, Peru. The first phase, including the development and piloting of data collection instruments, has already begun. However, we need someone who can begin the implementation of the project starting in January 2016. This includes collecting baseline data, administering surveys, and collaborating with the local health post. The primary objective of the project is to see if SMS messaging will improve the knowledge of nutrition and the use of micronutrient sprinkles (supplement powder) among mothers with children ages 6-36 months of age living in the peri-urban community of Oasis de Villa, Lima, Peru.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with other team members to implement baseline survey and qualitative focus group discussions, administer hemoglobin tests, manage database
- Review SMS nutritional information and send weekly SMS to study participants through TextIt application
- Collaborate with local field staff
- Plan for Phase 2 (6 months from baseline)
- Manage team meetings and visit community regularly
Skills:
- Experience in both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
- Understanding of childhood nutrition and anemia
- Understanding of TextIt platform or other mHealth tools (if you have taken Wolffy’s mHealth class, that’s a plus!)
- Great organizational skills and attention to detail
- Self-motivated and ability to take initiative
- Creative thinker
- Flexible and enthusiastic to listen and adapt to new ideas or changes
- Experience working outside of the United States
- Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in speaking, writing, and reading Spanish is required.
Start Date: January 2016
Duration: At least 3 month commitment
Arrival logistics/Housing support: Dr. Gilman’s secretary can arrange for a taxi from the airport upon your arrival. Two apartments are rented by Johns Hopkins professors. Rooms are available for all interns for about $100/month. One apartment is in Miraflores, a district that is considered to be the heart of the tourist center of Lima. The other apartment is located in Magdalena, which is a safe, quiet, residential area of Lima. Both locations are walking distance from grocery stores, nice restaurants, museums, bars, etc. The commute to the field site is about 45 minutes by bus from Miraflores, and 1.5hrs from Magdalena.
