Foundations Teaching Assistant
Local Public Health Institute of MA at BUSPH is looking to hire a teaching assistant for a 50 hour course being taught from October 2014 to March 2015.
Hours: approximately 60-75 spread out over 5-6 months
Salary: $15/hour
The teaching assistant will be helping with the Foundations Course for the Local Public Health Institute of MA. This is a 50 hour blended format course designed to teach those in the public health field about the basics of local public health practice. The TA will attend all class sessions, both in-person and virtually, and assist the course director with all aspects of course management. They will be responsible for tracking students’ completion of assignments. The TA will provide professional correspondence with students regularly. This includes responding to email requests within 24 hours. This job will include some travel to Boylston, MA.
Qualifications:
- MPH or MPH candidate
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experience with databases, including Microsoft Excel
- High level of organization skills
- Ability to balance multiple projects at the same time
- Availability over school breaks including winter break
- Interest in local public health a plus
- Valid driver’s license and a car are a plus (travel expenses reimbursed)

General Overview:
The Clinical Observer will assist the Principal Investigator and his Associates in the implementation of a research study designed to determine the impact of extended house staff work hours on medical errors in the intensive care unit setting. Observers will be responsible for the observation and recording of all actions performed by residents participating in a multi-disciplinary study of sleep deprivation and medical errors in the Boston Children’s Hospital pediatric intensive care unit (ICU). As a group, observers will be following interns 24 hours per day as they perform their duties in the ICUs, and will be recording all of their actions in a structured series of electronic data forms. Whenever a patient is admitted to the ICU, the observer will collect information about the patient. Whenever an adverse event or medical error is observed, observers will fill out data forms on the event. Each observer will work 8-12 hour shifts. At the end of each shift, another observer will take over for the one going off duty. Work as an observer will include evening and weekend hours.
Job Description:
- Pre-Study: Will receive intensive training in unobtrusive medical observation techniques, and in the use of all data forms required for study.
- Study Start-Up: Will begin observations under guidance from study investigators.
- Daily duties: Clinical observers will monitor all activities in the intensive care unit setting to identify medical errors. Will independently observe intern throughout a shift, recording all actions, errors, events. Will collect baseline information on all patients admitted to the ICU. Will complete structured data forms on errors and events while on duty. Will be as unobtrusive as possible in observation. Protocols for taking immediate action have been developed for the unlikely event that the observer discovers a critical error in evolution that could harm a patient if not acted upon.
- Signs out to incoming observer at end of shift.
- Assist in development of incident forms and study protocol.
- Adheres to data collection protocol.
- Prepares case reports and source documentation for independent monitoring and audits.
- Responds and completes data queries and clarifications.
- Responsible for data validation and quality control.
- Works with research team to insure adherence to IRB guidelines and regulations.
- May contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication in professional journals.
- Prepares weekly status reports for meetings and monitoring of database.
- Meets weekly with Investigators to review study progress.
- May participate in professional meetings, continuing education, and or formal academic programs.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Salary: $40,900 per year (annual rate); $27,267 total (duration of study is 8 months)
Qualifications:
Advanced clinical training required. MD degree preferred but requirement may be waived for exceptional candidates. Some experience as a research assistant strongly preferred. If foreign national, must have work or student visa which permits him/her to work in the United States on a full or part-time basis for the duration of the study.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT – GIS SPECIALIST – JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Prof. Jacob Bor is looking for an RA with expertise in ArcGIS (or other geospatial mapping software) to assist with creation of maps and linking data sources, in connection with a project on the scale-up of HIV treatment in South Africa. Short-Term Research Assistant Needed, start date ASAP!
Professors Jacob Bor and Bill MacLeod are looking for a student RA to assist with some data cleaning, data entry, and simple analytic tasks for an evaluation of South Africa’s HIV treatment program. The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, web research, and have access to a computer. The RA would report to Prof. Bor (CT380) and be expected to submit weekly progress reports.
We are looking for a student to start immediately. The total job is expected to take 40-50 hours and must completed by the 1st of October. Pay will be commensurate with standard RA rates for level of study.

Salud por Derecho is a human rights organization focused on defending the right to health. Through political advocacy, awareness-raising and social mobilization, in Spain and at the European and global levels, we work so that all people are able to exercise their right to health.

OBJECTIVES & FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
The responsibilities of the person who holds the position of “Policy & Advocacy Officer” will be to implement and develop advocacy projects in the organization, especially those which are related to R&D, access to medicines, and global health financing. Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Salud por Derecho, the new Officer will be responsible for researching, developing policy proposals and recommendations, fostering public debate, and mobilizing different actors around a common agenda that will make possible Salud por Derecho’s institutional achievements.
Functions:
- Planning, organization and execution of advocacy activities in Spain, Brussels and in other European countries where relevant.
- Maintain an overview of key policy issues, political processes, relevant research and events on health R&D; access to medicines; development financing; and global health.
- Develop “policy” materials (papers, reports, position papers and proposals) and communications to distribute through different channels (Salud por Derecho’s web page, social media, and traditional media).
- Organize events, meetings, conferences, etc.
- Represent and actively defend the objectives of the organization in meetings and in different forums and arenas, both nationally and internationally.
- Build and develop relationships with main decision makers and stakeholders.
- Develop alliances and facilitate working groups and discussion forums promoted by Salud por Derecho.
REQUIRED PROFILE
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
- Relevant professional experience in policy making and/or advocacy with an understanding of EU policy making processes.
- Fluent in English both written and oral is absolutely needed. Able to communicate effectively with others in Spanish, both oral and in writing is a minimum required.
- Background in global health, human rights and/or development. Understanding of biomedical R&D and access to medicines policies and landscape.
- Excellent ability to build and maintain relationships and outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Effectively work as a team member and independently, under pressure and with a high-level of self-motivation and initiative.
- Demonstrate high organizational skills and ability to set and meet goals, working in a continuously changing environment with flexibility.
- Capacity for critical and creative thinking and complex problem solving; as well as ability to identify opportunities.
- Identification with the values and goals of the organization, commitment with social change and interest in politics.
CONDITIONS
- 12-months period contract.
