Spring 2015 Practicum Opportunity in Nicaragua!

Superemos was founded at the end of 1999 as a non-profit foundation devoted to education and training programs based in the city of Estelí for low-income families in northern Nicaragua. Superemos is registered as a private, non-profit foundation with the Nicaraguan Ministerio de Gobernación (perpetual number #1809).
A practicum opportunity is available for a Spanish speaking MPH student in Estelí, Nicaragua during the spring of 2015. This six-week practicum will focus upon the oral health of school-age children attending public schools in Estelí, a city with a population of 160,000, located 90 miles north of Managua. Nearly 85% of school-age students in Estelí have untreated dental decay, which can potential interfere with growth and learning. The MPH student will facilitate the creation of a school-based oral health program with the goal of promoting children’s oral health. The program will include oral health education for children, teachers, and parents, as well as dental screening and fluoride varnish prevention efforts, and referral and case management for treatment services for children
Fluency in Spanish required. The MPH student’s role will include
- developing education materials
- implementing a public awareness campaign
- documenting program protocols
- creating record keeping/data management systems
- developing and monitoring an evaluation plan.
The practicum student will work with leaders of Superemos, an established NGO, as well as a local dentist, local dental clinic, school administration, teachers, and parents in one local community and its elementary school.
This is a 6 week, Spring 2015 Practicum with flexible start and end dates.
