3-week summer Experiential Program in Health and Development program in India, applications due April 1st

CRHP Summer Program 2014

The Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP), is now accepting applications for its 3-week Experiential Program in Health and Development. The course will run from June 22nd until July 13th, 2014 on its campus in Jamkhed, India.  CRHP offers this experiential course to familiarize students with CRHP’s integrated approach of equity, integration, and empowerment. Topics are based on relevant themes in global health, rural development, and community participation. In addition to classroom sessions with CRHP staff, students engage in village visits and discussions with community groups such as Farmers’ Clubs, Women’s Self-Help Groups, Adolescent Groups, and Village Health Workers. Students of all disciplines are welcome, and no previous experience in public health or development is required

SPH MC 730 - Leading Teams to Face Challenges and Achieve Results in Public Health

This course equips students with the theoretical knowledge and applied practices to lead teams to achieve results in public health settings. In addition to understanding leadership theory and analyzing public health cases, the course includes an experiential learning process, ideal for public health professionals who aspire to be effective leaders for change. Teams will work together to teach both theory and practical tools to mobilize groups and achieve results. Participants in this course cannot also take MC802 which covers similar materials in a field‐based course.

This is a 2 credit course that counts for IH credit! It has been moved to July 8th, so students doing a practicum in the beginning of the summer can attend. MC730 will be on Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm on the following dates : 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, 8/12, 8/19.

The Global Health Group is an "action tank," dedicated to identifying, elaborating and translating innovative solutions to major global health challenges into large-scale action, to advance health and save lives in low- and middle-income countries. The Global Health Group works across the spectrum, from conducting research and policy analysis, to building consensus, to catalyzing the development and implementation of pioneering programs in collaborating countries. Organizationally, the Global Health Group is a component of UCSF Global Health Sciences. The Global Health Group's Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) provides intellectual and practical leadership and support for the elimination of malaria, working from the global margins of the endemic zone inwards. The MEI recently received a 3-year grant to expand its work with a wide range of partners to gather, analyze and disseminate evidence on malaria elimination, and conduct in-country operational research, to inform national and global decision-making. JOB OVERVIEW
The MEI Program Manager will work closely with MEI Leadership and the Global Health Group (GHG) Core Team to lead monitoring and evaluation of the MEI's results and impact. Responsibilities will include developing and implementing a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plan for the MEI's new grant from the Gates Foundation ($15 million / 3 years) and other grants or contracts as they are received. The MEI Program Manager will be responsible for working with MEI Project Leads to develop annual work plans, regularly tracking progress against desired results and impact against the M&E plan and project work plans, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. The MEI Program Manager will be responsible for the annual and quarterly reports to the MEI's funders. The individual will also oversee all of the MEI's international subcontracts and vendor contracts for complex projects. As a member of the MEI Leadership Team, the MEI Program Manager will play a leading role in the strategic planning and fundraising efforts of the initiative. The MEI Program Manager must have M&E expertise, data analysis skills, excellent report writing and data presentation skills, proven program management and leadership skills, the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with changing priorities, capacity to manage many complex projects and international partners simultaneously, and be a team player. This is a full time, fully grant-funded position, reporting to the MEI Deputy Lead. The candidate will also perform other related duties.

Graduate Level Internship, Strategic Assessment and Planning at PATH

We accelerate innovation across five platforms—vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, devices, and system and service innovations—that harness our entrepreneurial insight, scientific and public health expertise, and passion for health equity. By mobilizing partners around the world, we take innovation to scale, working alongside countries primarily in Africa and Asia to tackle their greatest health needs. Together, we deliver measurable results that disrupt the cycle of poor health.

Internship project background and aims:

The primary purpose of this internship is to provide a dynamic and structured learning opportunity to assist in the development of country strategies in the context of changing public health and development realities and priorities (urbanization, increased GDP, aging populations, increased rates of obesity and NCDs, increased mobile phone penetration among others,) and in line with PATH’s “One Path” Global Strategy. The successful candidate will participate in researching and analyzing health and economic data related to the burden of disease, indicators of political will, human capacity and funding opportunities and in conjunction with a cross cutting team, provide synthesis and recommendations through health and business case analysis and presentations. Under the supervision of the team leader, a key aspect of this internship is to coordinate work on multiple discrete projects, including research and analysis of journal articles, grey literature and consultations with experts from within PATH, the public sector, NGOs and the private sector. The intern will also coordinate and, in some cases, participate in technical meetings, consultations and interviews and will provide documentation of meetings and outcomes including action items and timelines for completion.

Benefit to Intern:
Intern will gain specific skills around strategy development, mapping and managing deadlines, and assessing burden and feasibility of programmatic and policy components.  Using existing datasets, analysis will include assessment of magnitude of PH problems at the national level, assessment of political will, financial viability and capacity.  This information will be used to discuss, identify and map strategic opportunities in the context of core competencies of PATH.

Goals and learning objectives:

Analysis and synthesis of global and national burden of disease and other public health data

In conjunction with a team of experts, analysis and synthesis of “feasibility” components for impact at the national level (funding, capacity, political will)

Production of PowerPoint presentations for at least two countries which summarize the above

Interaction with key leaders and international experts familiar with the subject matter

Skills to be developed and/or expanded during internship:

70% of Time: Analyst

  • Conduct literature reviews on specific topics and provide analysis of journal articles and grey literature
  • Arrange and participate in interviews with key experts
