Summer practicum opportunity in Cameroon-Community needs assessment of birthing practices (2 spots available!)
The Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Board is looking for one or two students to complete a community needs assessment of birthing practices. The Baptist Hospital of Banyo (BHB), Cameroon will expand their maternal health services including a new maternity department but would like to involve the community as they plan the program expansion. The primary clientele of the hospital are from the Fulani ethnic group. Traditional birthing practices and religious beliefs lead to low utilization of delivery services. The hospital would like to expand their community outreach to raise awareness about maternal health issues and increase the number of women choosing to deliver at the hospital. Students would work with community health promoters to conduct focus groups, key informant interviews, and community mobilization activities.
The hospital is located in a rural area in a French-speaking part of Cameroon. All hospital employees speak English and French and an American doctor and his wife work at the hospital. Speaking French would be helpful but not required. The hospital services a population of over 140,000 people in collaboration with a government district hospital.
The hospital will provide lodging for up to 2 students. All other expenses are the responsibility of the student. The practicum opportunity is available either for July and August or September and October.

What do Global Impact Fellows do? Global Impact Fellows support and learn from the partner clinics' talented medical professionals. Through hands-on, structured training, Global Impact Fellows gain a comprehensive understanding about best practices in global health and social entrepreneurship, and they receive a Certificate in Global Health & Program Delivery.
Global Impact Fellows come from very diverse backgrounds, including those interested in public health, medicine, international development, social entrepreneurship, and the social sciences. Global Impact Fellows work with local doctors to eliminate patient barriers to care for patients living in extreme poverty. They assist with patient education, visual acuity screening, patient intake, distributing the glasses and medication prescribed by the local eye doctors, and other important support tasks. They also have the opportunity to observe the surgeries provided by the local doctors. Additionally, Global Impact Fellows may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional program for those interested in pursuing global health research. For example, current Global Impact Fellows are pursuing research studies about medication management, the use of visual resources for patient education, traditional medicine practices, and patient barriers to care.
What do Global Impact Fellows say? "I gained a vast basin of knowledge not only about eye health, but also on the healthcare infrastructure, patient interactions, and management systems of the developing world. Reading about health issues in the news or in class became stark reality during my summer in Dhenkanal, and I now aim to reinvigorate my efforts to study and contribute to the field of international health. Over the course of my career, I hope that I can one day return to India as a doctor and remedy the health inequalities that remain ever-present on a global scale," Pallavi Basu, Global Impact Fellow. ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship Program Now Accepting Applications
ASPH is pleased to offer recent graduates from ASPH member Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-Accredited Schools of Public Health an exciting opportunity to gain global health experience with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Applications are currently being accepted for the 2013 ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship Program - the deadline to apply is March 18.
In recognition of a career dedicated to improving the health of the world’s most vulnerable populations, ASPH, with support from CDC, established a fellowship in honor of Dr. Allan Rosenfield, former dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The students selected as ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellows are expected to involve themselves, as Dr. Rosenfield did throughout his career, in all aspects of global public health. The fellowship is a unique training opportunity to learn from leading CDC experts in CDC headquarters in Atlanta, GA, as well as various international posts.
"The Global Health Fellow program with ASPH/CDC has provided tangible knowledge and professional experience that helped me to not only think globally, but to also act locally,” said Mr. Abraham Deng Ater, an ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellow currently working with the Data Management Team of the Epidemiology and Strategic Information Branch within the Division of Global HIV/AIDS. “Seven months into my fellowship, I have visited three countries to work on various activities including: Data Quality Assessment exercise, Country Management and Support, and Site Monitoring. These visits and activities elucidate the global HIV/AIDS implications of data quality, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of information for formulation of better policy decision making."
The purpose of the fellowship program is to enhance the practice-based training of SPH graduates who have a keen interest in global health. Fellowship assignments will emphasize a variety of training areas such as global surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, epidemiology, strategic information and program management, thereby accelerating the fellows’ careers as future leaders in global public health. Currently, ASPH sponsors 42 ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellows assigned to various CDC offices worldwide.
ASPH is now accepting applications to fill multiple global health fellowship positions at CDC. Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities for a period of 12 months and will begin in September 2013. The fellowship features an intensive orientation, arranged by ASPH in consultation with CDC. The orientation will be held in Atlanta, prior to the start of the assignments, which is expected to occur in September. Detailed program information, the Program Announcement, and all application instructions can be accessed at http://fellowships.asph.org.
To qualify for this fellowship, candidates must have received their masters or doctorate degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship (no later than August 2013) or within the last five years from an ASPH-member CEPH-accredited School of Public Health, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card). Preference will be given to candidates with a Certification in Public Health.
A full list of accredited ASPH-member schools can be accessed via the ASPH website here.
