On behalf of the American Public Health Association (APHA), it is my pleasure to announce the call for applications for the 2014 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government.   This is the seventh year that APHA is offering this fellowship, which has been described as an “amazing” and “phenomenal” experience by previous fellows.

Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be interested in spending one year in Washington, D.C. working in a congressional office on legislative and policy issues related to health, the environment or other public health concerns.

The fellowship will begin in January 2014 and continue through December 2014. The fellowship provides a unique learning experience for a public health professional to gain practical knowledge in government and see how the legislative and public policy process works.

Applications and additional information are available at http://www.apha.org/advocacy/fellowship/.  Electronic application, including a CV and three letters of recommendation, are due to APHA by April 8, 2013.

All candidates:

Compete in the 3rd Annual Go Viral to Improve Health: IOM-NAE Health Data Collegiate Challenge

February 12th, 2013 in Outside Announcements

Using social networking, mobile apps, and other new technologies, how can the power of health data be unleashed to increase awareness of health problems and inspire positive action at the community level?  For the past two years, the IOM and NAE have challenged college and university students to use health data to develop effective, innovative apps that take on the nation’s pressing health issues. To learn more about the 2011 and 2012 Challenges, go to the Past Challenges page.

The 2013 Challenge

With an abundance of health data available as part of the Health Data Initiative (HDI), students have an unprecedented opportunity to create interactive apps and other tools that engage and empower people in ways that lead to better health. Working in teams that meld technological skills with health knowledge, the IOM and NAE believe that college students can generate exciting and powerful new products – the next “viral” apps - to improve health for communities and individuals.

To “Go Viral To Improve Health”:

  • Identify a health problem.
  • Assemble a team of between two and five students.
  • Develop an app using publicly available, de-identified health data.
  • Demonstrate how your solution will engage people in your community to promote action that will improve their health.

Teams must consist of 2 to 5 members and registration is due by February 27th.  Both full and part-time students are eligible to compete.  There is significant prize money for the winning teams.  For more details, please see http://www.iom.edu/Activities/PublicHealth/HealthData/GoViral.aspx
